The Heartbeat, also commonly known and referred to as the "Terror Radius", is a sound effect that is heard by Survivors IconHelpLoading survivor.png, who are within a certain distance from the Killer IconHelpLoading killer.png.


Overview

The Heartbeat, as the name states, is a heartbeat sound effect heard by Survivors within the so-called Terror Radius of a Killer. The Terror Radius is set at a default range of 32 metres, that can change from Killer to Killer.

The Heartbeat is intended to induce fear and anxiety into the Survivors, but also acts as a warning sound effect for an approaching Killer.

According to Benedict Baker's Journal, the Heartbeat heard by the Survivors is not their own, but the Killer's. However, this is contradicted by a Mysterious Note found in The Fog, which states that it is indeed the Survivors' own heartbeat that they hear.

Tempo & Volume

The rate of the Heartbeat is directly dependent on the Killer's proximity to the Survivors - with a faster and louder sound denoting the idea that the Killer is extremely close to the Player. If a Killer then engages in a chase with a Survivor, the Heartbeat will be replaced by a thrilling chase music from the Soundtrack.

Survivors with Madness II/III have the following affliction:

  • Considerable chance to play Terror Radius heartbeat for 15 seconds.
  • Afflictions of the same type do not stack.

An experimental version of the ECT procedure annotated by Doctor Herman Carter himself. Uses a deep wavelength that soothes various mental illnesses. With Carter's Spark as its source, this procedure causes uncontrollable fear and anxiety in the patient.
  • Considerably increases Terror Radius in Treatment mode.
  • Considerably decreases Terror Radius in Punishment mode.

Survivors with Madness have the following affliction:

  • Madness II: Tremendous chance to play Terror Radius heartbeat for 20 seconds.
  • Madness III: Constantly plays Terror Radius heartbeat.
  • Afflictions of the same type do not stack.

A glass-like king chess piece moulded from The Fog itself. The Entity's trace reverberating within can break the most powerful minds.
  • Every time a Survivor receives a Shock Therapy attack, they gain an affliction chosen at random from the following list:
    • Iridescent Calm: Survivors hear a constant distant heartbeat.
    • Iridescent Discipline: When a chase begins, Survivor in Madness II perceive the Red Stain and Terror Radius as though The Doctor were right behind them for a duration of 10 seconds. This effect is always active for Survivors in Madness III.
    • Iridescent Obedience: In Madness III, Survivors suffer from Exhaustion IconStatusEffects exhausted.png.
    • Iridescent Order: Broken Pallets may appear to be replaced with Illusionary Pallets that persist until approached.
    • Iridescent Restraint: Tremendously increases the duration of Doctor Illusions.
  • Afflictions of the same type do not stack.

This effect lasts until the power gauge is depleted.

You get excited in anticipation of hooking your prey.

Increases your Movement Speed while transporting bodies by 6/12/18 %.

While transporting a body, your Terror Radius is increased by 12 metres.

You are fuelled with an unexpected energy when saving an Ally from a Hook within the Killer's Terror Radius.

After unhooking a Survivor within the Killer's Terror Radius, for 15 seconds, any damage taken that would put the unhooked Survivor into the Dying State will instead apply the Deep Wound IconStatusEffects deepWound.png Status Effect. The Survivor has 10/15/20 seconds to mend themselves.

If the unhooked Survivor takes any damage while affected by Deep Wound or if its timer ends, the unhooked Survivor is immediately put into the Dying State IconHelp dying.png.

Unique to William "Bill" Overbeck until Level 35, at which point its Teachable version can then be learned and taught to the other Survivors.

The display of your Powers creates a whirlwind of panic that spreads throughout the land.

You become obsessed with one Survivor. Hitting the Obsession IconHelp obsession.png with your basic attack causes the Obsession to emit a Terror Radius of 32 metres for 20/25/30 seconds.

During that time, your Terror Radius is reduced to 0 metres.

The Obsession hears the Terror Radius they emit for the duration.

The Killer can only be obsessed with one Survivor at a time.

Activate-able Perk.

Standing within the Killer's Terror Radius while not in a Chase for 45 seconds activates Diversion.

  • Once Diversion is activated, press the Active Ability button while crouched and motionless to throw a pebble, which creates a loud noise notification for the Killer at a distance of 10/15/20 metres.
  • Diversion deactivates once it has been used.

Unlocks the stealth ability.

By standing still for 4/3/2 seconds, you reduce your Terror Radius to 0 metres and thus become stealthy until you move or act again.

Meticulous in your approach, terrifying in your application.

While in a Chase, your Terror Radius is increased by 8 metres.

Otherwise, your Terror Radius is decreased by 8 metres and your Field of View is increased by 3/5/10 °.

Field of View gains do not stack.

A supernatural bond links you to the Killer.

If you are looking in the Killer's direction, your link will reveal your Auras IconHelp auras.png to each other.

This effect applies only if you are outside of the Killer's Terror Radius.

As the Killer's Obsession IconHelp obsession.png, this effect applies to a maximum range of 56/64/72 metres. Otherwise, it applies to a maximum range of 44/56/64 metres.

Increases your chances of being the Obsession.

The Killer can only be obsessed with one Survivor at a time.

Getting close to the Killer IconHelpLoading killer.png fills you with determination.

For each 15 seconds you are standing within the Killer's Terror Radius and are not in a Chase, you gain a Token up to a maximum of 2/3/4 Tokens.

When Stake Out has at least 1 Token, Good Skill Checks IconHelp skillChecks.png are considered Great Skill Checks and consume 1 Token.

When a Generator IconHelpLoading generators.png is repaired at 85 %, you receive a noise notification and your Terror Radius is reduced to 0 metres for 8/10/12 seconds.

Survivors within your Terror Radius have a 10 % greater chance of triggering Skill Checks IconHelp skillChecks.png when repairing, healing or sabotaging.

Triggered Skill Checks' success zones are reduced by 40/50/60 %.

Hiding the Heartbeat

There are several ways for a Killer to hide the Heartbeat and prevent it from playing, thus alerting Survivors to their presence and proximity.

  • A Killer with the Insidious IconPerks insidious.png Perk will be able to reduce the Terror Radius to 0 metres after standing still for a certain amount of time (4/3/2 seconds), dependening on the Tier of the Perk.
  • The Wraith IconHelpLoading wraith.png cloaking himself and entering the Spirit World will have no Terror Radius.
  • The Pig IconHelpLoading pig.png crouching down will have no Terror Radius.
  • The Shape IconHelpLoading shape.png using Monitor & Abuse IconPerks monitorAndAbuse.png while remaining in Evil Within I, will have virtually no Terror Radius whilst not in a chase.
  • The Hag IconHelpLoading hag.png using the Grandma's Heart FulliconAddon granmasHeart.png will have her Terror Radius reduced to 0 metres after a Survivor trips one of her Phantasm Traps.

Trivia

  • The Lullabies of The Huntress and The Nightmare are not considered part of their Terror Radius and cannot be altered with any Perks.
    • The Nightmare's Terror Radius also affects Survivors both in and outside the Dream World, even if they don't hear the Heartbeat outside of it.
  • The Hag, The Huntress, The Nightmare and The Spirit are the only Killers who have a different Terror Radius than the default 32 metres.
